Mallorca is much more than just beaches. The island, spanning around 3,640 km², boasts three UNESCO-recognized natural wonders, one of Europe's most beautiful Gothic cathedrals, prehistoric caves, medieval mountain villages, Roman ruins, and a coastline that oscillates between Caribbean turquoise and Wagnerian drama. Anyone experiencing Mallorca properly for the first time will wonder why they spent the last ten summers elsewhere.

For this guide, we have selected 15 sights that paint a complete picture of the island – culture, nature, beaches, mountains, history. Spend a week visiting them, and you'll know Mallorca better than 95% of all repeat visitors.

🏛️ 1. La Seu Cathedral in Palma

The Gothic cathedral La Seu is Mallorca's landmark. It stands right on the water, and its rose window, at nearly 13 meters in diameter, is one of the largest Gothic rose windows in the world. Antoni Gaudí redesigned the interior in the early 20th century – the canopy with lights above the high altar is his work. Twice a year (February 2nd, November 11th), the famous "Miracle of the Eight" occurs, when the rose windows align to form the number eight.

    👑 2. Palau Reial de l'Almudaina

Right next to the cathedral: the Royal Palace, formerly a Moorish fortress. Today, it's the official summer residence of the Spanish Crown, but it's usually open to the public. Gothic halls, a courtyard garden with orange trees, and a viewpoint overlooking the harbor.

🌊 3. Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis

One of the most spectacular spots in Mallorca. Sa Calobra Bay is reached via a 13 km winding road with 27 hairpin turns (the pros from the Tour de France training camps ride up and down here). At the end: a tiny pebble cove between 200-meter-high cliffs, where the Torrent de Pareis flows into the sea – Mallorca's most famous gorge. Those who can swim can wade through a rock tunnel directly into the gorge.

🦅 4. Cap de Formentor — The Wild End of the Island

The narrow Cap de Formentor peninsula in the far north extends 13 km out to sea. Cliffs up to 300 meters high, a historic lighthouse at the end, and the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint with a nearly vertical drop to the Mediterranean. Traffic was restricted in summer 2024 – it's best to arrive by bus or shuttle. Sunrise at the lighthouse is one of the great Mallorca experiences.

🐉 5. Coves del Drac — The Dragon Caves

Near Porto Cristo are the Dragon Caves, a huge cave system with five large chambers and a 170-meter-long underground lake, Lago Martel – one of the largest underground lakes in Europe. Included in the admission price: a classical mini-concert on the lake with string quartets on an illuminated boat. It sounds kitschy, but it's surprisingly atmospheric.

⛪ 6. Lluc Monastery — The Spiritual Heart of the Island

In the middle of the Tramuntana mountains lies the Santuari de Lluc, Mallorca's most important pilgrimage site for over 700 years. The Mare de Déu de Lluc, a small black Madonna figure, is venerated here. The monastery is surrounded by mountain paths, a botanical garden, and a boys' choir (Els Blauets, 'the Blue Ones') sings in the monastery church in the mornings and evenings.

🏰 7. Castell de Bellver — The Round Castle Above Palma

A rare circular castle from the 14th century on a hill above Palma. Inside, there's a two-story courtyard with Gothic arches, a small city museum, and perhaps the best panoramic view over Palma and its bay.

    🏖️ 8. Es Trenc — Mallorca's Caribbean Beach

Es Trenc in the south is a 3 km long strip of fine white sand with turquoise water. Protected as a natural park, with no hotels directly on the beach, it features dunes, small beach bars, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the Bahamas. Arrive early – parking spaces are scarce after 11 a.m. in summer.

    🏖️ 9. Playa de Muro & S'Albufera

Playa de Muro is a gently sloping 6 km beach with fine sand, and behind it lies the S'Albufera Nature Reserve, the largest wetland in the Balearic Islands with 300 bird species. A family paradise and a nature experience at the same time – a rare combination.

🌵 10. Cala Mondragó — Natural Park with Picture-Perfect Beaches

In the south of the island lies the Mondragó Natural Park with the coves Cala Mondragó and S'Amarador. Pine trees reaching down to the water, fine sand, turquoise sea, and enough hiking trails around to spend a whole day there.

🌅 11. Caló des Moro and Cala Agulla

Two 'insider tip' beaches that are no longer a secret: Caló des Moro in the south is tiny, turquoise, dramatically hidden in the cliffs – an Instagram classic. Cala Agulla in the northeast is wider, calmer, and framed by a pine forest.

    🏘️ 12. Valldemossa — Chopin's Mountain Village

In the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana lies Valldemossa, a mountain village of honey-colored stone where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent a memorable winter in 1838 at the Cartoixa Monastery. Today, it's an elegant, somewhat touristy town with monastery tours, small art galleries, and the island's favorite sweet treat: Coca de Patata, a light and airy potato yeast pastry.

    🍊 13. Sóller & Fornalutx

The orange valley of Sóller and the neighboring Fornalutx are often called the 'most beautiful villages in Mallorca' – for good reason. Stone houses, green shutters, blooming orange groves. The historic wooden tram connects Sóller with the port of Port de Sóller.

🏰 14. Old Town of Alcúdia

The only completely preserved medieval town wall on the island – see our detailed Alcúdia Guide. Right next to it are the excavated Roman ruins of Pollentia and a twice-weekly market that is one of the most colorful on the island.

🌄 15. Serra de Tramuntana — UNESCO World Heritage Site

The entire mountain range on the west coast has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 for its spectacular combination of nature and centuries-old dry-stone wall landscapes. Hiking on the long-distance trail GR221 ('Dry Stone Route'), viewpoints like Mirador de Sa Foradada, the Miramar monastery complex, or the mountain roads with hairpin bends – the Tramuntana is Mallorca's wild heart.
