Alcúdia in the north of Mallorca is a combination so rare you hardly expect it: a completely preserved medieval city wall from the 13th century enclosing a small labyrinth of cobblestone alleys, eight kilometers of flat sandy beach right next door, the island's largest nature reserve less than 20 minutes away, and in the background, the first foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana. Rarely is so much of Mallorca concentrated in such a small space.
Anyone seeing Alcúdia for the first time is usually surprised: The walled Old Town (Casc Antic) looks almost Etruscan in the way its honey-colored city walls rise from the hilly landscape. The tourist resort of Port d'Alcúdia on the beach, by contrast, is a modern hotel strip, but it has been significantly modernized in recent years. The two are ten minutes apart and complement each other perfectly.
🏰 The Old Town — Walls, Towers, and Tapas
The city wall of Alcúdia is almost completely preserved—a rare stroke of luck in a region where most fortifications have long since been plundered for stone. You can walk along the top for a large part of it, enjoying views into the city center as well as over the surrounding plain with the first peaks of the Tramuntana.
Inside, a compact network of alleys, small squares, and old town palaces awaits. Highlights:

- Plaça de la Constitució – The main square with the town hall, shady trees, and several cafés. On Tuesdays and Sundays, a weekly market is held on the surrounding streets, one of the largest on the island.
- Església de Sant Jaume – A parish church from the 14th century, rebuilt several times in later centuries.
- Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia – A small, very well-curated museum with finds from the Roman city of Pollentia, which once lay directly beneath present-day Alcúdia.
- Ruins of Pollentia – The excavated Roman settlement just outside the city walls. Forum, residential quarter, remains of a small theater.
If you like tapas: Bar Antiga and Sa Plaça are two reliable spots right in the old town, with good sangria and locals at the bar.
🌊 The Beach — Playa de Muro and Platja d'Alcúdia
What are officially two beaches is in reality an 8 km long strip of sand. From the port to the S'Albufera nature reserve, a gently sloping, white-sand beach stretches out, ranking among the best family beaches in Europe. The water barely gets deeper than 1.5 meters even 100 meters out, ideal for children. The wind is usually gentle, and on some days, mini-waves form that beginners love for bodyboarding.
The beach is wide enough that privacy is possible even in August. In the southern section around Playa de Muro, the beach meets dunes and pine forest—the wilder, more natural end. To the north, towards Port d'Alcúdia, you'll find beach bars, pedal boats, sun loungers, and a promenade.
🦩 S'Albufera — The Largest Wetland in the Balearic Islands
Directly behind the dunes begins the Parc Natural de S'Albufera de Mallorca, a 1,700-hectare wetland that is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the western Mediterranean. Over 300 bird species have been documented here: flamingos in autumn, rare herons, kingfishers, and marsh harriers.
Admission is free, and you walk on a network of paths and wooden boardwalks; there are several observation towers. Best time to visit: early morning or late afternoon. For serious birdwatchers, S'Albufera is a must-see—but even families will find the walk exciting because the entire system of reeds, canals, and lagoons is so unique.
🚲 Cycling Around Alcúdia
The region around Alcúdia is the best cycling area for beginners in Mallorca. It's flat, well-signposted, with many bike paths and several rental shops. Three classic tours:
- Cap de Formentor *(45 km, challenging)* – The famous peninsula route with dramatic cliffs and the lighthouse at its outermost point.
- Pollença and Albufera *(35 km, moderate)* – Via the pretty mountain town of Pollença, returning through the nature reserve.
- Coll de Sa Batalla *(60 km, difficult)* – An ambitious day trip with a mountain climb into the Tramuntana, for trained cyclists.
🍽️ Where to Eat?
- Sa Vinya d'en Cardell *(Pollença, 15 min)* – Modern Mallorcan menu in a former winery.
- Restaurante Mirador de la Victòria *(La Victoria Peninsula, 20 min)* – Not for the menu, but for the panoramic view over the bay. Reservations are mandatory.
- Bistro del Jardín *(Port d'Alcúdia)* – Basque-Mallorcan fusion, from the former owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant in San Sebastián.
- Bodega del Sol *(Alcúdia Old Town)* – A rustic wine shop with a tapas kitchen, perfect for an apéritif.

🌳 La Victoria Peninsula — The Quiet Counterpart
Little known: On the north side of the bay, a small, almost untouched peninsula juts out into the sea—La Victoria. Here you'll find the tiny Ermita de la Victoria, a 17th-century pilgrimage church with a simple restaurant next door. From the parking lot, hiking trails lead through pine forests to Talaia d'Alcúdia (445 m), the highest point of the peninsula with a 360-degree view. A 2.5-hour circular hike, one of the most beautiful short tours on the island.

- September: The best all-around time. Warm sea, fewer tourists, many festivals (Sant Jaume).
