Balos Lagoon – Crete’s remote northwest corner delivers something special. Imagine the sea here, a spectrum of 14 blues and greens, all held captive by the rugged cliffs of Cape Gramvousa. This lagoon forms where the Gramvousa peninsula almost kisses Tigani island. The result? A warm, shallow pool, anywhere from ankle to waist deep — ideal for kids splashing around. The sand itself is a marvel, white streaked with pink from countless crushed shells. In spots, the water is so still and warm, it feels like nature's own infinity edge.
Up above, the 1579 Venetian fortress on Gramvousa island adds a historical weight to the scene. The walk down from the parking lot, about 20 minutes, is a slow reveal. Each step brings more of Balos into view; it's one of Greece's best unveilings. Keep an eye out: Loggerhead sea turtles nest nearby, and sometimes, the endangered bearded vulture circles high above the gorges.
