Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, might just be the most photographed stretch of sand anywhere. You can only reach this private cove on Zakynthos’ northwest coast by boat. Limestone cliffs, some 200 meters high, wall it in, stark against the brilliant white sand below.
Right in the middle, the MV Panagiotis, a smuggler's ship from 1980, sits beached, its hull now a deep rust color. The water here, an impossible turquoise, gets its vibrant hue from the white limestone bedrock reflecting through the Ionian Sea. For that postcard shot, head to the clifftop viewing platform directly above; the clash of the deep blue water, the pale cliffs, and the wrecked ship is pure Greek island iconography.
Base jumping from these cliffs has, surprisingly, put Navagio on the map for extreme sports. Since the beach faces west, aim for late afternoon sun. That’s when the light turns the cliffs and the wreck a warm, unforgettable gold.
