    About

Falassarna is Crete's answer to the Caribbean — a wide, 1-kilometer expanse of fine golden sand backed by sand dunes and washed by crystal-clear turquoise water. Unlike the more famous Elafonissi and Balos, Falassarna offers genuine wide-open beach space where you can always find room even in peak summer. The beach faces due west, delivering what many consider the most spectacular sunsets in all of Crete — the sky transforms into layers of gold, orange, and purple as the sun sinks into the open Mediterranean.

Five distinct beach sections offer everything from organized stretches with sunbeds and beach bars to completely wild, undeveloped coves. The ancient port city of Falassarna, dating to the 4th century BC, lies in ruins at the northern end of the beach — including a remarkable stone throne carved into the rock. The water quality is consistently rated among the cleanest in Greece, earning repeated Blue Flag awards.

A beach party atmosphere develops on summer evenings with local tavernas serving fresh fish and Cretan wine.

"Came for a long weekend. Sand is fine, water is genuinely turquoise. One downside — very limited shade, bring an umbrella or rent early."
