Ibiza Sights 2026: Dalt Vila, Es Vedrà & 12 More Highlights
Ibiza has more to offer than clubs: the UNESCO Old Town Dalt Vila, the mystical Es Vedrà rock, hippie markets, and hidden calas. Our complete guide to the 14 most beautiful sights on the island.
Ibiza is the island of clichés. If you only think of the Pacha hashtag, you're missing out on the fact that this small island in the western Mediterranean is actually one of the most culturally rich of the Balearic Islands. A UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, mystical rock formations, Roman and Punic ruins, the oldest hippie market in Europe, salty lagoons, white salt pans, secret calas – all on just 572 km².
This guide is for all Ibiza travelers who want more than the beach club scene. We'll show you what makes Ibiza the most fascinating island in the Balearics by day.
🏰 1. Dalt Vila — The UNESCO Old Town
The fortress of Ibiza Town's old quarter, Dalt Vila, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Mighty Renaissance bastions enclose a labyrinth of whitewashed houses perched on a rocky hill above the harbor. At the top: the 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria, several viewpoints, and the Archaeological Museum. At sunset, the sight of the city walls, illuminated golden-yellow by the evening sun, is one of the great Mediterranean experiences.
🪨 2. Es Vedrà — The Mystical Rock
Off the southwest coast, a 400-meter-high, pyramid-shaped limestone rock juts out of the sea: Es Vedrà. Geologically an anomaly, mystically a magical place – various legends surround it (home of the Sirens from Homer's Odyssey, the third most magnetic point in the world – scientifically unproven, but atmospheric). Best viewpoints: the high point above Cala d'Hort, the Torre des Savinar, and the beach itself at sunset.
🏖️ 3. Cala Comte
The bay of Cala Comte in the west is Ibiza's most famous sunset beach. Turquoise water lapping against the small offshore islands, a classic beach restaurant (Sunset Ashram) on the rock above, and from 7 p.m. in high summer, it's truly packed – but justifiably so.
🏖️ 4. Cala Salada and Cala Bassa
Cala Salada and Cala Bassa are two of the island's most beautiful family beaches. Crystal-clear water, soft sand, pine trees right down to the water's edge, and in Cala Bassa, the famous Cala Bassa Beach Club (CBbC) serves as an upscale beach club destination.
🌅 5. Las Dalias Hippie Market (Sant Carles)
Since the 1970s, the Las Dalias hippie market has been held every Saturday in Sant Carles de Peralta – one of the oldest and most colorful in Europe. Over 200 stalls with handmade jewelry, fabrics, leather goods, vintage fashion, and alternative esoterica. Authentic, lively, and not staged like the competing market in Es Canar.
🧂 6. Ses Salines — The White Salt Flats
In the south of the island lie the salt pans of Ses Salines, in operation for over 2,000 years (Phoenicians, Romans, later the Crown). In summer, the geometric water pools are colored pink by algae and brine shrimp – and attract flamingos. The entire area is a nature reserve, with the famous Ses Salines beach making for a perfect end to the day.
🏛️ 7. Phoenician Sa Caleta
Near Sa Caleta, the oldest settlement on the island was excavated – a Phoenician settlement from the 8th century BC. Today, it's a simple walk around the foundations, with free admission, combined with lunch at the legendary Sa Caleta restaurant right on the beach (fresh fish, a local classic).
🕯️ 8. Cova de Can Marçà Cave
In the north, on the cliffs of Port de Sant Miquel, lies this dramatic dripstone cave. Formerly a smugglers' hideout (tobacco, alcohol after the war), today it offers illuminated guided tours, waterfalls, and sound installations. 40 minutes, worthwhile on a rainy day or to cool off.
🌳 9. Sant Joan de Labritja
The most traditional mountain village in Ibiza, located in the hilly north. 18th-century village church, Wednesday and Sunday market, several small organic restaurants. Anyone who wants to see the "old Ibiza" comes here.
⛪ 10. The Churches of Santa Eulària and Sant Carles
The white fortified churches of Ibiza are architectural curiosities – a mix of fortress and sacred building, whitewashed, unadorned, and impressive. Santa Eulària and Sant Carles are particularly worth seeing.
🚣 11. Formentera as a Day Trip
The smaller sister island of Formentera is just a 30-minute ferry ride south of Ibiza. Here you'll find Ses Illetes, regularly ranked among the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world – Caribbean-like turquoise stripes, almost no development, and bike paths through wild Mediterranean vegetation. A day trip to Formentera is a must-do.
🥁 12. Sunset Drum Circles at Benirràs Beach
Every Sunday evening at Benirràs Beach in the north, a colorful mix of hippies, tourists, and locals gathers for drum circles at sunset. Atmospherically unique: hundreds of drummers, fire jugglers, swirls of incense, all set against a dramatically sinking sun.
🍇 13. Bodegas — Ibiza's Reawakening Wine Scene
Ibiza has an old, almost forgotten wine tradition. Revived in the last ten years by bodegas like Can Rich (organic), Sa Cova, and Can Maymó. Tastings with olive oil samples, a rural atmosphere – the culinary counterpart to the beach island.
🌄 14. Hiking in the Northern Hills
Ibiza's north is hilly, densely forested, and crisscrossed by countless small hiking trails. The tour to Penya Esbarrada with views of the north coast and the islet of Es Vedrà (in the northern panorama) is demanding but rewarding. Best season: October to May.
🗓️ When to Go to Ibiza?
- May–June: Spring bloom, all beaches empty, water from 21°C, bohemian high season.
- July–August: High season, crowded, expensive, club season at its peak.
- September: Our recommendation. Water is warmest, hippie markets without the crowds, prices drop.
- October: Last week of sun, many beach restaurants close at the end of the month.
- November–April: Island in hibernation, deserted, quiet, a beauty of its own – not for a classic holiday.
🎯 Insider Tips
- 🎯 Es Vedrà Sunset: If the famous sunset rock is your destination, arrive 1 hour before sunset – parking spots fill up after that.
- 🎯 Las Dalias Early: Visit the Saturday market as early as 10 a.m.; it gets crowded from noon onwards.
- 🎯 Ses Salines not at noon in high summer: The heat is brutal, with no shade. Come early or in the evening.
- 🎯 Dalt Vila in the Evening Light: The city walls glow golden – a unique photo opportunity.
- 🎯 Formentera Overnight? If you have the time, a night on Formentera is unforgettable.
