Voulisma Beach (Istron)

Voulisma — also known as Golden Beach or Istron Bay — is eastern Crete's most stunning family beach: a sheltered crescent of incredibly fine golden sand lapped by warm, shallow turquoise water so clear it resembles a swimming pool. The bay faces south-east, protected from the prevailing Meltemi winds that can make northern Cretan beaches rough in summer. The water stays warm well into October, often reaching 26°C.

Backed by olive-covered hills and overlooking the Mirabello Bay — one of the largest natural bays in the Mediterranean — Voulisma offers a picture-perfect setting. The beach is well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar, yet never feels overcrowded thanks to its generous 350-meter length. The nearby town of Agios Nikolaos, with its charming Lake Voulismeni and waterfront tavernas, makes an excellent base.

The ancient Minoan site of Gournia and the island fortress of Spinalonga are both within easy day-trip distance.
