Elafonissi is Crete's most magical beach — a surreal lagoon of pink-tinted sand and impossibly shallow turquoise water that you wade through to reach a small island nature reserve. The pink hue comes from millions of crushed seashells and coral fragments mixed into the fine white sand, creating an otherworldly pastel landscape that intensifies in the warm afternoon light. The lagoon is so shallow — often just ankle-deep for 50 meters — that it feels like walking on water.
Elafonissi island, a protected Natura 2000 site, hosts over 110 plant species including the rare Mediterranean sea daffodil. The beach is backed by wild dunes covered in juniper and lavender, and the surrounding waters are home to loggerhead sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals. Despite its remote location at Crete's southwestern tip, Elafonissi attracts up to 5,000 visitors on peak summer days — arrive before 10am to experience its full magic in relative peace.

"Look, the beach itself is gorgeous and I'd come back. But — be honest about what to expect. The sunbeds are expensive in season, the nearest decent restaurant is a 10-minute walk and on weekends locals (rightly) take the best spots early. Go on a Tuesday in June and you'll think you've found paradise."
