"Worth the detour. Bring water shoes — pebbles in places."

Sakarun on Dugi Otok island is Croatia's answer to the Caribbean — an 800-meter crescent of fine white sand curving around a shallow bay of luminous turquoise water, backed by a forest of Aleppo pines. The sand — unusual for Croatia's typically rocky coastline — is brilliantly white and the water so clear and shallow that it glows in electric shades of turquoise and aquamarine. Sakarun faces northwest, catching the afternoon sun and delivering spectacular sunsets over the open Adriatic.
The beach is part of the Telašćica Nature Park, which also encompasses the dramatic salt lake of Mir and towering 160-meter sea cliffs. Dugi Otok ('Long Island') is reached by ferry from Zadar in about 1.5 hours, and the relative inaccessibility keeps crowds manageable even in peak summer.
The island has a wild, unspoiled character with olive groves, stone walls, and tiny fishing villages. A small beach bar provides drinks and snacks, but Sakarun's appeal lies in its natural, undeveloped beauty.
