Menorca is the introverted sister of the Balearic Islands. While Mallorca and Ibiza are overrun in the summer, Menorca goes its own, quieter way. The entire island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, has strict building regulations, almost no high-rises, and over 75% of its coastline is undeveloped. Those looking for an authentic, uncrowded Mediterranean experience, who want pristine beaches in protected nature, and who find prehistoric cultures and British colonial architecture fascinating – will feel at home in Menorca.

This guide reveals Menorca's best-kept secrets: hidden coves reachable only by hiking trail, prehistoric stone circles from the Talayotic culture, small mountain restaurants with no menu, and island villages that seem to be from another century.

    🐚 The Calas — Menorca's Picture-Perfect Coves

Menorca's coast is split into two characters. The north is wild, shaped by the Tramontana wind, with dark rocks and red-sand beaches. The south is a Mediterranean classic: white coves with turquoise water nestled between pine forests. Our 8 absolute favorites:

    - Cala Macarella & Macarelleta – the most famous coves on the island. Horseshoe-shaped, turquoise, framed by pine trees. Macarelleta (the smaller one) is only reachable via a 10-min path – it's worth it.
    - Cala Mitjana – fine white sand, high limestone cliffs, popular with cliff jumpers. Walk in: 25 min. through the forest.
    - Cala Turqueta – the name says it all. Turquoise, nestled between pine trees, crowded in high summer – come before 10 am.
    - Cala Pregonda – Mars-like red rocks, golden sand, a remote north coast classic. 25 min. hike on foot.
    - Cala en Porter – Family-friendly, large sheltered bay, with the legendary [Cova d'en Xoroi](#cova) cliff bar above it.
    - Cala Galdana – the only developed bay in the south, but wide and beautiful, an ideal family spot.
    - Cala Pilar – a long hike from the car park, but for that reason, you're often almost alone.
    - Cala Mesquida – wildly romantic beach in the south with dunes.

🥾 Camí de Cavalls — the historic coastal path

The GR223 "Camí de Cavalls" is a 185 km long coastal path that circles the entire island. Originally established in the 14th century for cavalry patrols, today it's one of Europe's most beautiful long-distance hiking trails. 20 stages, each between 5 and 14 km. You can walk the entire route in two weeks or tackle individual day sections.

    Our favorites:

    - Stage 13 (Cala Galdana – Cala Macarella – Cala Turqueta): 7 km, medium difficulty, the most picture-perfect stage.
    - Stage 8 (Es Grau – Cap de Favàritx): 8 km, through the Albufera nature reserve to the lunar-landscaped Favàritx lighthouse.
    - Stage 4 (Binimel·là – Cala Pregonda): 4 km, shortest hike to Pregonda.

    ⛰️ Talayotic Culture — Menorca's Prehistoric Heritage

Little known fact: Menorca is an archaeological treasure island. Spread across the island are over 1,500 prehistoric sites from the Talayotic culture (1300–550 BC) – megaliths, watchtowers, burial chambers. In 2023, UNESCO declared Menorca's Talayotic heritage a World Heritage Site. The most important sites:

    - Naveta des Tudons – a 4,000-year-old burial chamber in the shape of a ship, built from geometrically arranged stone blocks. One of the oldest stone constructions in Europe.
    - Talatí de Dalt – a complete village complex with a talayot (watchtower), taula (T-shaped stone monument), and courtyard structures.
    - Trepucó – the largest taula on the island, almost 5 meters high.
    - Torre d'en Galmés – the largest prehistoric village in the Balearic Islands, excellently reconstructed.

Entrance fees are symbolic everywhere (€2–4), experience 3,000 years of island history from the Bronze Age to the Roman conquest.

    ⚓ Maó — Europe's Second-Longest Natural Harbor

The capital, Maó (Mahón), is situated on a 6 km long natural harbor – the second-longest natural harbor in the world after Pearl Harbor. This is precisely what made Menorca a strategic jewel in the 18th century: the British, French, and Spanish took turns ruling. The British period (1708–1802) left its mark on the architecture: typical sash windows, Palladian facades; "Georgian Maó" is a unique cityscape in the western Mediterranean.

    Highlights of Maó:

    - Plaça de la Constitució with the town hall and Santa Maria Church.
    - Mercado del Carme in a former Carmelite monastery church.
    - Xoriguer Gin Distillery – the famous gin distillery of Mahón (see next section).
    - Boat tour through the natural harbor – 1 hour, shows all the military forts and small islands in the harbor.

🍸 Mahón Gin — the British Legacy

British rule left behind a culinary classic: Gin de Mahón. Distilled with juniper, it's smoother than London Dry Gin. The most famous producer is Gin Xoriguer in Maó. The traditional island cocktail is called Pomada: gin with lemon soda, served ice-cold in summer – a summer ritual on Menorca.

🏘️ Ciutadella — the Historic Capital

Before the British made Maó the capital, Ciutadella in the west was the center. Today, it is the more beautiful of the two cities: a picturesque old harbor with boats and restaurants, a Gothic cathedral, the palm-lined boulevard Es Born, and stately noble palaces. Worth a full day.

Especially worth seeing: the summer festival Festes de Sant Joan on June 23–24 with magnificent equestrian games ("Jocs des Pla") – a unique UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

🌳 Hiking in Es Grau and the Albufera

In the north of Menorca lies the Parc Natural de S'Albufera des Grau, the ecological heart of the Biosphere Reserve. 5,000 hectares of marshland, meadows, and pine forest, with the village of Es Grau as a charming mini-harbor center. Black storks, ospreys, and over 90 species of birds nest here. Hiking trails are well-marked, admission is free.

🗿 The Cova d'en Xoroi — Bar in the Cliff

Above the bay of Cala en Porter, in a natural cave in the 30-meter cliff, lies the famous Cova d'en Xoroi. During the day, it's a viewpoint for sunsets; in the evening, it becomes one of Europe's most atmospheric cocktail bars. The story is romantic: in the 18th century, the pirate Xoroi is said to have lived here with the kidnapped daughter of a farmer – an island legend.

    🏨 Hotels in Menorca

In recent years, Menorca has seen the opening of ambitious boutique hotels in old fincas and city palaces. Our top addresses:

    - Torralbenc Menorca – renovated finca with 27 rooms, a pool, and its own winery.
    - Menorca Experimental – designer boutique hotel by the Parisian Experimental Group.
    - Cugó Gran Menorca – exclusive country house with 14 suites.

🗓️ Best Time to Visit Menorca

    - May–June: ideal hiking season, empty beaches, water from 20°C.
    - July–August: high season but much more relaxed than Mallorca/Ibiza, water 24–26°C.
    - September: our favorite – warm sea, empty beaches, perfect restaurant terraces.
    - October: last beach month, Tramontana storms are possible but spectacular.
    - November–April: island in hibernation, good for hiking and bird watching.

    🎯 Insider Tips
