When you look down on Port de Sóller from above, you immediately understand why this harbor town is different from the rest of Mallorca. An almost perfectly circular bay, on whose shores ochre-colored houses huddle, behind them the rugged peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana – the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the Balearic Islands. No high-rise hotels, no beach clubs with booming bass, but a quiet, cultivated elegance that has been attracting artists, writers, and style-conscious travelers for over a hundred years.

This guide shows you how to experience Port de Sóller properly: with the historic wooden tram, a hike in the mountains, lunch by the water, and a boat trip to hidden coves accessible only from the sea.

🚋 The historic Tramvía — the wooden tram from 1913

The most famous attraction is not a beach, but a mode of transport: Since 1913, an open, wood-paneled tram has connected the mountain town of Sóller with its port. Five kilometers through orange groves, past farmhouses, always with a sea view in the background. The tram rattles, rings, and jolts – and yet (or perhaps because of it) it is one of the most beautiful travel experiences on the island.

Combined with the Tren de Sóller, an even older narrow-gauge railway from 1912 that runs once a day from Palma to Sóller, it creates a day trip that feels like a film set from the 1920s: train from Palma, tram to Port de Sóller, boat trip, lunch, and back.

🛥️ The Harbor and the Llaüts

In the harbor basin, alongside modern yachts, you can still find the traditional Llaüts – small, sturdily built wooden fishing boats in bright colors. Early in the morning, a few of them still go out to fish; around noon, sea bream and gilthead land in the restaurant kitchens on the quay. The walk around the bay takes just under an hour, with panoramic stops, an ice cream parlor at the southern end, and the classic photo opportunity of the small Far de Bufador lighthouse at the harbor entrance.

🥾 Hikes from Port de Sóller

The Serra de Tramuntana literally begins at the harbor. Three hikes are particularly worthwhile:

    - Cap Gros Lighthouse, easy: 1.5 hours round trip, paved, fantastic view over the bay. Sunset from up here is a must.
    - Sa Costera and the Coves de Sa Costera, moderate: 5 hours, spectacular coastal hike with a small beach at the end, accessible only on foot or by boat.
    - GR221 – Dry Stone Route, challenging: 2–8 day stages, Mallorca's famous long-distance trail from Port d'Andratx to Pollença. Best season: October to May.

The mountain village of Fornalutx is an hour away in the valley and is considered the most beautiful village in Mallorca – tightly packed stone houses with green shutters, completely car-free, with a mountain panorama. Those looking for a quiet afternoon can take the bus up and walk back through the orange groves.

🚤 Boat Trips — Hidden Coves of the North Coast

The north coast of the Tramuntana is barely developed from the land side. By boat, a different world opens up: dramatic cliffs, small pebble coves with no road access, turquoise water. The two classic excursions:

    - Sa Calobra – Boats run several times a day. The famous Torrent de Pareis gorge empties into the sea here in a pebble bay between 200-meter-high cliffs.
    - Cala Tuent – quieter than Sa Calobra, remote, no restaurant on the beach. Ideal for a long day of swimming.

For a full-day experience, a private yacht charter from Port de Sóller is recommended – the brokers are located right at the harbor.

    🍽️ Where to Eat Best?

Port de Sóller has developed its own mini restaurant scene. Three recommendations:

    - Es Faro – on the cliff above the harbor, classic Mallorcan cuisine with a first-class view. Reservations are essential.
    - Lluna 5 Cents in Sóller (10 min by tram) – modern menu, seamless service, a favorite spot for many local chefs.
    - Randemar – on the beach, with a sandy floor, family-style cooking, perfect for a long lunch with children.

🏨 Hotels in Port de Sóller

The star of the bay is the Jumeirah Mallorca: a modern luxury hotel on the cliffside above the harbor, with three pools, a spa, and one of the best breakfasts on the island. Those who prefer something smaller and more personal will find a range of charming boutique hotels in old town palaces in the mountain village of Sóller.

🍊 Sóller — The Orange Myth

The valley of Sóller has been famous for its oranges for centuries. Long before tourism, exporting oranges to France was the main source of income – the tunnel road to Palma, built in 1997, was even named after this trade: *Túnel de Sóller, La Ruta de la Naranja*. In spring, the trees blossom and the whole valley has a sweet, intoxicating scent. Fresh orange juice in Sóller's market square is the traditional souvenir.

    🗓️ Best Time to Visit

    - March–May: Orange blossom, ideal hiking temperatures, few tourists.
    - June & September: Swimming months, mild weather, all boats are running.
    - July–August: Crowded, but more bearable than southern Mallorca thanks to the mountain climate.
    - October–November: Hiking season, many restaurants still open, vibrant autumn colors in the mountains.

    🚗 Getting There

From Palma airport, you can reach Port de Sóller in 45 minutes via the tunnel (toll). More romantic is the old pass road over the Coll de Sóller with its 57 hairpin bends – but be warned: in summer heat and with camper van traffic, it's a test of patience.

    🎯 Insider Tips

    - 🎯 Sundowner Spot: The small pier next to the Es Faro restaurant offers the best sunset view in the bay.
    - 🎯 Early Boat Trip: The first boats to Sa Calobra leave at 9 a.m. – before the bus tourists from Palma arrive.
    - 🎯 Fornalutx Lunch: Make a reservation at Es Turo and sit on the shaded terrace.
    - 🎯 Market Day: Saturday is market day in Sóller, the most beautiful on the island after Santa Maria.
    - 🎯 Pack Hiking Shoes: Even the walk to the lighthouse becomes uncomfortable in sandals.
