Preveli Palm Beach

Preveli Beach is Crete's most enchanting hidden paradise — where a freshwater river lined with Cretan date palms flows through a dramatic gorge to meet the Libyan Sea, creating a unique landscape of river, palm oasis, and golden sand beach. The Megalopotamos River carves through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge before spreading into a reed-fringed lagoon that feeds into the sea — creating natural freshwater pools perfect for swimming among the palms. The river water is noticeably cooler than the warm sea, creating a refreshing microclimate.

The palm forest, featuring the endemic Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti), was devastated by fire in 2010 but has made a remarkable recovery. Access is via a steep 15-minute descent from the parking area, or by boat from Plakias — the hiking path rewards with stunning cliff-top views. The Preveli Monastery above the gorge played a heroic role in WWII, sheltering Allied soldiers after the Battle of Crete, and maintains a small museum and operating church.
