Zanzibar has two beaches that appear in almost every guidebook, and they sit so close together — just 4 km apart — that travellers inevitably ask: what's actually the difference? Get that answer right, and your Zanzibar trip falls into place. Get it wrong, and you may know by the first afternoon.

Here’s the honest distinction — stripped of brochure gloss.

    🏖 The decisive difference: tides

Start with the thing that matters most: almost all of Zanzibar's beaches are tidal. At low tide, the sea can pull back up to 800 metres, leaving behind seagrass, coral shelves and long stretches where swimming simply isn’t possible. Except in Nungwi and Kendwa. Both are on the northwest tip of the island, which is why they draw so many travellers in the first place: you can swim here at any time without arranging your day around a tide table.

    🥇 Nungwi — Zanzibar's lively flagship

Nungwi is the larger, livelier, more commercial beach of the pair. The village has expanded into a proper holiday hub, with dozens of hotels from backpacker stays to five-star resorts, a long beach promenade, traditional dhow boats heading out for sunset cruises, and a vibrant night scene centred on beach bars like Cholo's and Kilima Bar, where reggae often carries late into the night.

    Pro Nungwi:

    - Walkable promenade with restaurants, bars, shops
    - Best nightlife on the island (even mid-week)
    - Wide hotel choice in every price bracket
    - Sunset dhow trips from the beach
    - Mnarani Aquarium (turtle sanctuary)

    Con Nungwi:

    - Crowded, especially between hotels and beach
    - Beach vendors (massages, jewellery, tours) — some find them pushy
    - Some hotels built very close together

    Best hotels:

    - Z Hotel — modern boutique on the beach
    - Essque Zalu Zanzibar — high-end resort, just outside
    - DoubleTree by Hilton Nungwi — reliable mid-range

🥈 Kendwa — the quieter sister

Kendwa sits 4 km south of Nungwi and feels smaller, quieter, less developed from the moment you arrive. The beach is even broader and whiter, the water even shallower and more turquoise, with fewer hotels, almost no promenade and hardly any vendors. What it does have is space, silence between the waves, one of East Africa's most beautiful sunsets, and the famous Full Moon Parties at Kendwa Rocks — every full moon, with thousands of guests and international DJs.

    Pro Kendwa:

    - Quieter, broader beach with finest powder sand
    - Spectacular sunsets with unobstructed western view
    - Fewer vendors, relaxed atmosphere
    - Top resorts with generous beach frontage
    - Full Moon Parties (legendary)

    Con Kendwa:

    - Few restaurants outside resorts
    - No village life, less "Zanzibar feel"
    - Quiet at night (unless full moon)
    - Taxi to Nungwi needed (€5–10)

    Best hotels:

    - Riu Palace Zanzibar — family-friendly all-inclusive
    - Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa — small, romantic, premium
    - Sandies Baobab — mid-range with big beach
    - Kendwa Rocks — backpacker classic, full moon party spot

    🤔 Which suits you?

    Nungwi if you:
    - ✅ Want lively beach feel, bars, restaurants in walking distance
    - ✅ Are solo or a couple looking for action
    - ✅ Are budget-conscious (more choice in every bracket)
    - ✅ Want to be out after sunset

    Kendwa if you:
    - ✅ Want quiet, romance and the more beautiful beach
    - ✅ Are honeymooners or premium-seeking couples
    - ✅ Travel with small kids (safe shallow water, less hustle)
    - ✅ Want the best sunset on Zanzibar

My clear tip: with one week on Zanzibar, split it as 3 days Kendwa, 2 days Nungwi, 2 days Stone Town. With 10 days, add 2 days Paje on the east coast, Zanzibar’s kitesurfing mecca.

🗓 Best time to visit Zanzibar

    - June–October: Dry season, 25–28°C, the ideal window.
    - December–February: Hotter (28–32°C), short showers, best diving.
    - March–May: Long rains — avoid, many hotels close.
    - November: Short rains, often only afternoon showers.

    🍽 Eating

Nungwi has The Rock — on a rock in the sea, world-famous, ~€60 pp — and Mwaloni Market for local fish. In Kendwa, you’ll mostly eat in hotel restaurants. For a change of pace, make a day trip to Stone Town and stay into the evening for the Forodhani Night Market, where Zanzibar pizza and sugarcane juice are part of the ritual.

    ✈️ Getting there

    - Fly to Zanzibar Stone Town (ZNZ) — direct from Frankfurt, Milan, Doha, Dubai.
    - Airport → Nungwi/Kendwa: ~75 min, €60–80 hotel transfer.
    - Don't rent a car (left-hand traffic, potholes) — use taxis and dalla-dallas.

    💡 Insider tips

    - 🎯 Mosquito protection essential (discuss anti-malarials with your doctor).
    - 🎯 Bring USD cash — cards work in hotels, not everywhere.
    - 🎯 Dress respectfully in Stone Town and villages (shoulders and knees covered).
    - 🎯 Spice Tour in Stone Town — one of the best half-day excursions.
    - 🎯 Mnemba Atoll: snorkelling and diving with dolphins, bookable from Nungwi and Kendwa.
