If you only take one road trip in your life, make it the Lofoten Islands. This 200-km archipelago north of the Arctic Circle has a way of stopping conversation mid-sentence: 2,000-metre granite spires shooting straight out of the Atlantic, white-sand beaches that might pass for Caribbean if the water weren't 8°C, red fishermen's huts balanced on stilts, and that unmistakable, salty-sweet smell of drying stockfish in the air.

The E10, the European route linking island to island, earns its reputation as one of the world's most beautiful roads. Give yourself seven days and you can do it properly — with time for the big views, the best hikes, and at least one night in a rorbu (converted fishing cabin on stilts).

    🚗 Day 1 — Arrive in Svolvær

Fly to Bodø, then take the car ferry to Moskenes (4 hrs, spectacular) OR hop on an inland flight to Svolvær (25 min). Pick up your rental at Svolvær airport. Stay at Anker Brygge, right on the harbour. For dinner, order stockfish or fresh skrei (winter) at Børsen Spiseri.

    🚗 Day 2 — Svolvær & Henningsvær

Morning: hike Tjeldbergtinden (1.5 hrs, easy) — the best view over Svolvær. In the afternoon, drive 25 min to Henningsvær, the famous "Venice of Lofoten" scattered across small islands. Stop at Café Klatrekafeen for cake; visit Gallery Lofotens Hus for Frank Jenssen's light photography. The Henningsvær football pitch is one of the world's most photographed sports grounds.

    🚗 Day 3 — Vestvågøy & Haukland Beach

Follow the E10 west (1 hr). Pause at the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg — an 83-m reconstructed 9th-century chieftain's longhouse. Then continue to Haukland Beach and Uttakleiv Beach, two of Europe's finest. Hike Mannen (1.5 hrs, moderate) for the view you've seen on postcards. Stay at Hattvika Lodge or Eliassen Rorbuer.

    🚗 Day 4 — Reine & Reinebringen

Continue to Reine (1 hr) — the postcard village of the Lofoten. If you're fit and the weather is good, climb Reinebringen (2 hrs round-trip, 1,978 stone steps) for the islands' most famous view. Otherwise, kayak in Reinefjord. Stay in a rorbu in Sakrisøy or Reine — a red cabin over the water, €80 in May, €250 in July.

🚗 Day 5 — To the end of the world: Å i Lofoten

Drive to the end of the road: Å (pronounced "oh"), literally the last letter of the Norwegian alphabet. Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum shows how fishermen lived a century ago. Stop at Hamnøy (Norway's most-photographed motif), then the drying racks at Tind and Sørvågen. Dinner at Maren Anna: cod tongues, stockfish, fish soup.

🚗 Day 6 — Bunes Beach or Kvalvika

Choose one of the great hikes today. Either Bunes Beach (5 hrs, ferry from Reine) or Kvalvika & Ryten (4 hrs, the beach looks unreal from above). If your legs need a rest, take it slower with SUP/kayak in Reinefjord.

    🚗 Day 7 — Slow drive back

Return to Svolvær by way of everything you missed: Nusfjord (oldest preserved fishing village), Strandkjellen Gallery in Eggum, Unstad Beach (yes, Arctic surfing). Spend the last night in Svolvær or Henningsvær. Fly out from Svolvær or Bodø.

    🗓 Best time

    - June–August: Midnight sun (28 May–14 July sun never sets). Warm (15–20°C), but expensive and busy — book rorbus 6+ months ahead.
    - September: Golden light, fewer tourists, first northern lights.
    - February–March: Aurora season, dramatic winter light, stockfish season — but cold (-5°C) and some roads closed.
    - Avoid Nov–Jan (polar night).

    🚙 Rental tips

    - Book 3–6 months ahead — cars sell out in summer.
    - 4WD not needed in summer; helpful in winter.
    - Sky Norge or Avis at Bodø/Svolvær are reliable.
    - Fill up in Svolvær or Leknes — there are few stations along the route.

    🏨 Rorbu vs hotel

At least one night in a rorbu is mandatory. Eliassen Rorbuer in Hamnøy and Reine Rorbuer are classics. They are not cheap (€180–280/night summer), but eagles over the fjord at breakfast and midnight sun from your porch have a way of making the bill feel easier.

    🍽 Eating

    - Skrei (winter): the famous cod migrating from the Barents Sea.
    - Tørrfisk (stockfish): tastings at every drying rack.
    - Cod tongues: fried — a local specialty.
    - Cold-water shrimp straight off Svolvær boats.

    💡 Insider tips

    - 🎯 Maps offline — mobile signal is good but not everywhere.
    - 🎯 Weather changes fast — always pack a rain jacket and layers.
    - 🎯 Mosquitoes in summer — bring DEET.
    - 🎯 Aurora app: "My Aurora Forecast" — KP 4+ is enough on Lofoten.
    - 🎯 Fly out from Bodø instead of returning rental in Svolvær — often €100 cheaper.
