The first time you step out of the car in southern Albania and catch sight of the Ksamil Islands — four small, wooded islets set in bright turquoise shallows — it becomes clear why people call them the \"Caribbean of Europe\". For once, the nickname is not just brochure talk. The water really does have that startling colour, thanks to a white limestone seabed and the position of the Albanian Riviera on the Greek tectonic margin.
🏝 The four islands
The islands sit so close to the mainland that you can swim to the first in about five minutes. All four fall within UNESCO-protected Butrint National Park, which has spared them the fate of overdevelopment:
- Island 1 (Ksamil Beach): The closest and busiest, with a strip of sand and a few sunbeds. 5 min swim or 1 min by pedalo.
- Island 2: Mid-size, with a small landing cove that works beautifully for a picnic.
- Island 3: The most dramatic of the group — higher cliffs, plus a hidden cove tucked around the back.
- Island 4: Small, low, and often quiet if you make the effort to reach it by kayak or private boat.
🚤 How to get there
1. Swim (free, 5–15 min): Cheapest, and still the most satisfying way across. Wear water shoes — the entry is rocky.
2. Pedalo or kayak (€10–15/hr): Flexible and fun, with enough freedom to hop between all four. My top pick.
3. Water taxi (~€5 pp return): The simplest option if you are travelling with kids or grandparents.

🏛 Butrint — the UNESCO site next door
Just 10 minutes south is one of the Mediterranean's most important archaeological sites: a 4th-century BC Greek theatre, Roman forum, Byzantine basilica, and Venetian fortress, all layered into one walkable park beside a wetland where pelicans nest. Give it a half day rather than rushing through.
🗓 Best time
- Mid-May to mid-June: 22–24°C water, maquis in bloom, and beaches that still feel unclaimed.
- Mid-September to mid-October: 25°C sea, with hotel prices halved after the summer rush.
- July–August: 32°C on land, and beaches packed with Albanians, Italians and Kosovars.
🏨 Where to stay
Ksamil village has grown quickly, so expect plenty of new, straightforward hotels rather than old-world glamour. For a quieter base, sleep in Sarandë (15 min north) or in the mountain villages of Lukova or Borsh (40 min south).

✈️ Getting there
- Tirana (TIA): Year-round, followed by a 4–5 hr drive.
- Corfu (CFU): Faster in summer — fly to Corfu and take the hydrofoil to Sarandë (30 min, ~€25).
💡 Insider tips
- 🎯 Be on the beach before 9 am in July/August, or the shade will already be gone.
- 🎯 Rent a car — buses are limited.
- 🎯 Bring cash — many small spots don't take cards.
- 🎯 Pulëbardha Beach (10 min north): the same clear water, with half the people.
- 🎯 Sunset from Lekursi Castle in Sarandë — one of the Adriatic's best views.
