In October, the Dolomites feel transformed. The famous larch forests burn gold — and because larches are the only conifers that lose their needles, entire slopes take on a colour you rarely see elsewhere in the Alps. Then comes the Enrosadira: that blush of pink across the limestone walls at dawn and dusk, sharpened by the low, clear autumn light.
The best part? The summer crowds are gone, huts are still open, and the weather is often steady. My clear favourite for the Dolomites.
🍂 Why October?
- Larch colour: mid-October peak — whole valleys in gold
- Quiet: high season over, school holidays mostly done
- Stable weather: high-pressure spells common, crystal-clear views
- Huts open: most rifugios open until mid-October (often early November)
- Half the hotel prices of August
🥾 Best autumn hikes
1. Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop (3 hrs, easy)

The classic route, crowded in summer, finally has room to breathe again in October. This 9.5 km loop circles the iconic Three Peaks, with the north walls almost always in sight. Start at Rifugio Auronzo (toll road).
2. Lago di Sorapis (4 hrs, moderate)
The turquoise mountain lake looks even stranger, brighter, and colder in autumn light. Start at Passo Tre Croci for the 13 km round-trip, which includes cable-secured passages.
3. Seceda ridge walk (3–4 hrs, easy-moderate)
The jagged Geisler Peaks rise above golden meadows — the most-photographed Dolomites motif for good reason. Take the cable car from Ortisei, then follow the ridge walk to the Pieralongia hut.
4. Lago di Braies (1 hr, easy)

In October, finally without the Insta queues. The famous Pragser Wildsee sits still and green-blue, with wooden boats at the shore and Croda del Becco behind. The flat loop is 3.5 km.
5. Alpe di Siusi panoramic walk Saltria–Compatsch (4 hrs, easy)
Europe's largest high-alpine meadow shifts into autumn dress. The lush grass turns golden brown, with Schlern and Langkofel standing behind it like a stage set.
6. Cinque Torri loop (2 hrs, easy)
Five sharp rock pinnacles between Cortina and Falzarego Pass. The bonus here is the WWI open-air museum around the towers — trenches, gun positions, and a sobering sense of the mountains’ history.
🗓 Weather notes
- First half October: mostly warm (15–18°C day, 5°C night)
- Second half: first snow possible above 2,000 m
- Important: after 20 October check forecast — huts close fast
🏨 Where to stay
- Cortina d'Ampezzo: stylish, pricier, base for Tre Cime and Sorapis
- Ortisei (St. Ulrich): Val Gardena, base for Seceda and Alpe di Siusi
- Corvara: Alta Badia, Ladin culture, quieter
- Lago di Braies: Hotel Pragser Wildsee — legendary 4-star directly on the lake
My tip: spend one night in a mountain hut at 2,500 m — for example Rifugio Lagazuoi, with arguably the best Alpine breakfast view there is.
🍝 Eating
This is not Mediterranean Italy: think Knödel, speck, Schlutzkrapfen, cheese boards. A Brettljause in a hut, with South Tyrolean speck, mountain cheese and a glass of Lagrein — that tastes like October in the Dolomites.
🚗 Getting there
- Car: ~6 hrs from Munich, 8 hrs from Frankfurt
- Train: to Brixen or Innsbruck, then bus/rental
- Fly: Innsbruck or Verona, then 2–3 hrs by car
