When Lisbon locals talk about their favourite beach, they do not usually mean Cascais or the Algarve. They say: "We go to Comporta." Often with the faintest smile, the kind that suggests they have already said too much.
And in a way, that is Comporta: a 60-km coastal strip an hour south of Lisbon, another world from the capital. Rice paddies on the Atlantic (yes, really), empty dune landscapes, cork oak forests and exactly three small villages without a single high-rise.
🏖 What makes Comporta special
While the Algarve was filling with resort high-rises in the 70s, Comporta enforced strict building protection. Maximum two storeys, thatched roofs mandatory, whitewashed walls. The result is a village-chic atmosphere that feels closer to Saint-Tropez fifty years ago than almost anywhere else in Europe.
The Portuguese elite — politicians, actors, fashion designers — have kept summer houses here for decades. Madonna had one, so does Christian Louboutin. Still, there is no loud glamour buzz. Quiet, horses on the beach, picnics in the pine woods. That is the rhythm.

🌊 The beaches
Praia da Comporta is wide, white and wild — Atlantic surf rolling in, ideal for beginners and walkers. Carry on and you reach Praia do Pego (a bit trendier, with the famous Sublime Comporta beach club) and Praia do Carvalhal (more family-friendly).
Further south are Praia da Galé and Praia das Bicas — almost always empty, and made for long, unhurried walks.
🌾 The rice paddies
The Sado estuary is one of the few rice-growing areas in Western Europe. Bright green fields in summer, golden at harvest in autumn. A bike ride through the rice fields is one of the loveliest things to do in Comporta; I remember the flat roads, the warm air, and the sudden flash of wings over the water. Bonus: the rice land is home to flamingos, herons and storks — Comporta is one of Portugal's best birding regions.
🐬 The dolphins

The Sado estuary hosts one of the only resident dolphin pods in Western Europe (~30 animals). Dolphin-watching tours from Setúbal are almost a sure thing.
🏨 Where to stay
Sublime Comporta (5-star, boutique): the most famous in the region, set in pine forest, with private villas, from €400/night.
Quinta da Comporta (5-star): wellness resort with thatched-roof architecture and a rice-field-style pool.
Casas na Areia (boutique): sand floors in the living room, iconic design, from €350/night.
Pestana Tróia Eco-Resort (mid-range): on Tróia peninsula, opposite Setúbal, family-friendly.
My tip: for budget, rent an Airbnb in Carvalhal or Comporta village — €150–250/night for a typical white house.
🍽 Eating
Comporta has a small but surprisingly good restaurant scene:
- Sal Restaurant (Praia do Pego): beach club with excellent kitchen, sundowner mandatory
- Cavalariça Comporta: in a converted horse stable, creative Portuguese
- Sublime Beach Club: refined, pasta and fresh fish
- Museu do Arroz: in the old rice museum, traditional arroz de marisco
🗓 Best time
- May–June: my favourite — warm (22–25°C), water still fresh (18°C), barely any tourists
- July–August: high season, weekenders from Lisbon, hotel prices double
- September–October: golden autumn, warm, empty, perfect
- November–April: wild, rainy, empty — only for romantics
🚗 Getting there
- Fly to Lisbon (LIS): direct from D-A-CH year-round
- Rental car essential (no real public transport)
- 1 hr south of Lisbon over the 25 de Abril bridge and A2
- Alternative: ferry Setúbal → Tróia (45 min, spectacular)
