Belle Mare Beach unfurls along Mauritius’s east coast in a long sweep of pale sand, bordered by casuarina trees and a lagoon that shifts from translucent aquamarine to vivid turquoise. The shoreline feels spacious and serene, particularly in the soft light of morning, when the east-facing horizon catches the sunrise and fishing boats rest beyond the shallows.
Protected in places by the island’s offshore reef, the lagoon is generally inviting for swimming and snorkelling, although conditions vary with wind, tide and season. The east coast is naturally breezier than the west, making warmer months appealing for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Boat excursions may lead to nearby islets, reef sites and the waterfalls around Grande Rivière Sud-Est, while golf is available at distinguished coastal courses in the wider area.
Belle Mare is framed by elegant resorts, yet public access points preserve its open, unhurried character. Some stretches offer sun loungers and water-sports facilities through hotels, while quieter sections remain simple and beautifully undeveloped. Local vendors may appear near busier access areas, but services are not continuous along the entire beach, so it is sensible to carry water and sun protection.
The most comfortable period is generally during Mauritius’s drier, cooler months from May to October. From November to April, the sea is warmer and the landscape lush, though humidity and rainfall increase and tropical systems are possible. Whether chosen for a sunrise walk, a languid lagoon swim or a polished resort stay, Belle Mare captures the graceful, light-filled spirit of eastern Mauritius.
