Scala dei Turchi — the 'Staircase of the Turks' — is one of the most visually striking natural formations in the Mediterranean: a blindingly white marlstone cliff sculpted by wind and waves into a massive natural staircase that cascades into azure water. The brilliant white limestone creates a surreal contrast with the deep blue sea and the golden sand beaches on either side. The rock is soft enough to sit and lie on comfortably, and the smooth, wave-polished terraces create natural sun lounging platforms.
Named for the Turkish pirates who once sheltered beneath these cliffs, the formation is a geological marvel of biancone marlstone — a type of soft limestone found in only a few places worldwide. Swimming at the base of the white cliffs, with the water reflecting the chalky rock, creates an almost otherworldly turquoise glow. Arrive in the late afternoon when the setting sun turns the white rock golden-pink — an unforgettable sight.
The beach is free to access though the cliff area sometimes requires a small conservation fee.
